This thesis examined traditional wood craft methods and their results; traditional wooden structures. The aim was to choose one traditional wooden structure and utilize it in the design of a practical and durable serving tray for the client's Float Kallio / Roba premises.

The research methods of the work were document and artifact analysis, participatory observation and prototyping, ie model work. Document analysis was used to elucidate the history and traditions of the structures using the ethnographic literature. Artifact analysis served as a method to deepen and refine the structural analysis.

Participatory observation was used to further define the objectives of the design, which led to the selection of the traditional wooden structure best suited for the serving tray. The simple but durable structure of duckboards proved to be best suited for the design of a serving tray, so the design process focused on examining the duckboard structure further. Model work was used to develop the structure until the goals set for the design were met.

The result of the work was a durable and practical serving tray, the structure of which utilizes the simple structure of duckboards familiar to many Scandinavians. The serving tray is easy to carry thanks to the elevated surface throughout, and the reduced design language makes it an aesthetically durable everyday item. Based on the thesis, there is still a lot to be utilized in traditional structures, and familiarization with them doesn’t always produce naive national romantic designs, as the end result can also be very modern and suitable for the conditions of our time.
