The purpose of this thesis was to examine which kind of additional services are profitable to be combined with paid bicycle parking experiments in Turku. In addition, it was investigated what kind of paid bicycle parking business models are found around the world and in Finland. One of the purposes of this thesis was to examine different companies in the field who would be willing to produce bicycle maintenance services in connection with the paid bicycle parking experiments. The thesis was commissioned by the Low-carbon transport in mobility hubs project.

The theoretical part concentrates on the interest of the citizen of Turku in paid bicycle parking, the business models of paid bicycle parking, demand of safe bicycle parking and additional services connected to the paid bicycle parking. The theoretical part of the thesis was based mainly on literature. The interest for different kinds of additional services was examined via surveys targeted towards employees and students- in the Kupittaa area in the city of Turku. More depth to the surveys was gained from interviews. Companies in the field were approached by emails and phone calls.

Based the results it can be stated that additional services are a desirable feature in connection with paid bicycle parking. The most desirable features were found to be self service stations and washing stations for bicycles. There are two companies in Turku willing to provide paid bicycle maintenance services in connection with paid bicycle parking. There are many models of paid bicycle parking in the world and in Finland. A railway operator in the Netherlands, for example provides paid and free of charge bicycle parking at all of their stations. In Finland, the company Vapaus at the Tripla mall and Hämeenlinnan pysäköinti Oy provide paid bicycle parking with additional services.
