This bachelor’s thesis aimed to gather information on the benefits of sensory modulation and its use in mental health care focusing on psychotic disorders. Research information was collected on the relationship between psychotic disorders and sensory perception, and on the effects of sensory modulation in the rehabilitation of psychotic disorders. A plan for a sensory modulation room in Turku's new psychiatric hospital's psychosis ward was developed based on a descriptive literature review. The plan includes suggestions for the necessary equipment and methods. The thesis was commissioned by the Occupational Therapy Business Services of Turku University of Applied Sciences.

Sensory modulation is a method that utilizes the senses to alter an individual's alertness and emotions. The use of sensory modulation has increased, and its effectiveness in mental health services has been recognized. However, research information on the benefits and use of sensory modulation, especially in the rehabilitation of psychoses or schizophrenia, is relatively limited.

Based on the conducted literature review, sensory processing disorders, such as sensory hypersensitivity, sensory under-responsivity and sensory avoidance, are often associated with the most common psychotic disorder, schizophrenia. According to the studies found, the benefits of sensory modulation related to psychotic disorders include reduced anxiety, improved social functioning, increased energy levels, increased motivation and improved management of both positive and negative symptoms. Sensory modulation is seen as a valuable form of rehabilitation alongside current methods.
